Our home and native land
Canada is truly an incredible place to live.
While it may not seem like it to us unfortunate urban commuters, our country is the second largest country by landmass in the world (9,970,610 square kms) with one of the lowest population densities on the planet. There is currently about 1 square kilometer for every 4 Canadians! Our natural resources abound. Canada has:
- the world's longest coastline - 243,792 kms
- approximately one-tenth of the world's forests
- nearly one-fourth of the world's fresh water
Even our man-made achievements rank highly in the developed world, we have:
It seems odd then that so many of us simply do not want to talk about, let alone deeply consider, this inevitable stage in all of our lives.
- the longest national highway - the Trans Canada stretching 7,604 kms
- the tallest self-supporting structure - the CN tower at 1,815 ft
- the largest shopping mall - West Edmonton Mall at 5.3 million square ft
And when it comes to quality of life and our health, Canadians are generally regarded as some of the most fortunate. We have:
- one of the lowest infant mortality rates - 4.6/1000 live births
- one of the highest life expectancies - 80.3 years
Yet, Canada, like all other countries in the world, still has an overall mortality rate of 100% - there is still no way to escape death. It seems odd then that so many of us simply do not want to talk about, let alone deeply consider, this inevitable stage in all of our lives. Well, as you've likely guessed, our purpose here is to explore this issue. And we invite you to join us as we discuss death and beyond.
